Why

The 'Globe' roundabout is a 'Transport Node'. Several roads meet there. A century ago it was even the terminus of a tram service from Bath.

The dual carriageway is a barrier

Nowadays, if you're travelling on to Bath or to Bristol from 'the Globe', you'll find lots of transport provision - if you're in a car that is. The very effective roundabout and dual carriageway, if you're on foot or cycle, is also a barrier to travel. Today, it would not be built in its current form.

The local authority, Bath and North East Somerset, is working to improve conditions for people on foot or cycle at the roundabout itself. But the other thing that's needed is an easy route to Bath and to Bristol. That's what's offered by the Bath and Bristol railway path - just a few hundred metres across the fields from the Globe roundabout. Hence our proposal for 600 or so metres of surfaced route to connect the two.

£150,000+ for a cycle path to a pub?

Indeed, but as well as a pub:

  • The A39 joins the A4 at 'The Globe'.
  • The village of Corston is close by.
  • Bath Spa University's Newton Park campus is just up the hill.
The dual carriageway towards Bath does have a footpath of sorts, but there's no provision at all for people on bikes and a very hostile stretch of road that was designed in response to the demands of the likes of some of these people. Individuals who would otherwise cycle, tell us the road design is the major reason that they don't. It's time to do something about this.
